How to Sell on eBay for Beginners: Steps, Fees and Flip Math

How best to sell on eBay in 2026: flip math, real US fees (13.6% + per-order fee), pricing from sold comps, sourcing tips, scams and 1099-K rules.

The best way to sell on eBay is to buy low, set your price from what has actually sold, take honest photos, write titles the way buyers search, and work out the fees before you pay for any stock. Listing is free for up to 250 items a month. When something sells, most categories take 13.6% of the sale plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order.

Flip math: one thrifted fleece jacket#

Buy priceSell priceFeesShipping/suppliesProfit
$7.00$45.00 (free shipping)$6.52$9.00$22.48

How we got there: this is an example, not a promise. We assume the jacket sells in a standard category at 13.6%. That’s $45 × 13.6% = $6.12, plus the $0.40 per-order fee for orders over $10, which makes $6.52. The $9 for postage and a poly mailer is our estimate, so check real label prices for your package weight. Your time isn’t in the table. We assume sourcing, washing, photographing, listing and packing one jacket takes about an hour. Decide whether $22 for that hour is worth it to you.

Before you list: what eBay requires#

  • Age: eBay’s policies say you must be 18 or older to use the site.
  • Tax ID: every seller account needs a Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN, ITIN or EIN). Enter all 9 digits. A missing or partial number can lead to payout holds and backup withholding.
  • A way to get paid: a checking account or a Visa/Mastercard debit card. Savings accounts and PayPal aren’t accepted for payouts.
  • Selling limits: new accounts have monthly selling limits. eBay reviews accounts every month and raises the limits automatically as your sales and feedback grow. You can also ask for an increase, and eBay may ask you for more information. Paying for an eBay Store does not raise your limits.

Personal or business account? A personal account is fine for clearing out closets and testing the waters. eBay Live (livestream selling) requires a business account. If you plan to buy stock to resell regularly, we think a business account keeps things tidier.

What eBay fees cost#

These are the main numbers from eBay’s selling fees page for sellers without a Store:

FeeWhat it costs
Insertion (listing) feeFree for up to 250 listings a month, then $0.35 per listing in most categories
Final value fee, most categories13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500, plus 2.35% on anything above that
Per-order fee$0.30 on orders of $10 or less, $0.40 on orders over $10
International fee (US sellers)1.65% of the total sale
Dispute fee$20
Optional upgradesBold $2 to $4, subtitle $0.50 to $6, reserve price $5 or 7.5% (capped at $250)

Category rates flippers run into#

Not every category charges 13.6%. Check yours before you buy:

CategoryFinal value fee
Books, Movies & Music15.3% up to $7,500
Coins (non-bullion)13.25%
Women’s handbags15% up to $2,000, 9% above
Jewelry & Watches15% up to $5,000, 9% above
Guitars & Basses6.7% up to $7,500
Athletic shoes selling for $150 or more8%, with no per-order fee

So a box of thrifted paperbacks pays 15.3%, compared with 13.6% in most other categories. On cheap media, that gap matters.

Quick fee check#

On a $100 sale in a standard category, the fees come to $13.60 + $0.40 = $14.00. Use that as a gut check: about 14% comes off before you pay for shipping, supplies or the item itself.

Costs that sneak up on you#

  • Promoted Listings (ads): with a general campaign, you choose an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the sale. Since January 13, 2026, US sellers pay that fee if the item sells within 30 days of any buyer clicking the ad, not only the buyer who purchased. The item has to be promoted both when the click happens and when it sells, and you’re charged the rate in effect at the time of sale. On our $45 jacket, a 5% ad rate adds $2.25.
  • Currency conversion: if you list on another country’s eBay site, eBay charges for converting the currency. For US-registered sellers the rate rises from 3% to 3.25% on October 14, 2026.
  • Penalty fees: if your account drops to Below Standard, you pay an extra 6%, rising to 7% after four or more months in a row. A “Very High” rate of not-as-described returns adds 5% in the affected categories, rising to 6% after four months. These penalties started July 1, 2026, so accurate descriptions save you real money.

When an eBay Store pays for itself#

Store tierMonthly (month to month)Monthly (yearly plan)Free fixed-price listings
Starter$7.95$4.95250
Basic$27.95$21.951,000 (10,000 in select categories)
Premium$74.95$59.9510,000 (50,000 in select categories)

Store subscribers pay lower final value fee percentages, but the per-order fee still applies. Our rule of thumb: if you regularly list well over 250 items a month, compare the cost of Basic with what you’re paying in $0.35 insertion fees. On the yearly plan, Basic costs about the same as 63 extra listings. If you list fewer than 250 items a month, you probably don’t need a Store.

Selling on eBay step by step#

  1. Set up a corner of your home. You need a shelf for stock, a plain wall or white poster board for photos, a scale, tape and mailers.
  2. Create your account. Choose personal or business, then add your full 9-digit tax ID and a checking account or debit card for payouts.
  3. Start with things you already own. Your first few sales build feedback, which helps your limits go up, and they don’t put your cash at risk.
  4. Price from sold listings, not active ones. Search for your item, then filter to sold items. Asking prices show what sellers hope to get. Sold prices show what buyers actually paid.
  5. Photograph everything. Take plenty of real photos in daylight with no filters. Include tags, labels, model numbers, serial plates and every flaw. For clothing, add a shot with a measuring tape.
  6. Write the title the way a buyer would search. Include brand, item type, model, size, color and the key feature. Since August 2026, fashion categories require standardized sizes, so fill in the size fields properly.
  7. Pick a format. Use Buy It Now for common items you can price from sold listings. Auctions suit collectibles where demand is hard to guess. Since May 13, 2026, winning auction bidders on eBay.com can’t cancel on their own. They can ask you to cancel, and it’s your choice whether to agree.
  8. Set shipping, handling time and returns. Top Rated Plus requires a handling time of the same day or 1 business day, plus free returns for 30 days or longer (more on that below).
  9. Ship with tracking from a carrier connected to eBay. On orders of $750 or more (including shipping and tax), add signature confirmation so you keep your item-not-received protection.
  10. Get paid and repeat. Payouts arrive on your chosen schedule. Leave feedback, then go source the next round.

What to look for#

When you pick something up to resell, flip it over and check for:

  • Brand tags, maker’s marks or stamps you can search exactly as written.
  • Model or style numbers on labels, battery doors or the underside.
  • Completeness: every piece, cord, lid, manual and original box.
  • Working condition you can test in the shop: batteries, outlets, zippers, snaps.
  • Clean seams and no odors on clothing. Smoke smell is hard to remove and easy for buyers to complain about.
  • Light weight and a size that’s easy to ship. Postage can eat all the profit on bulky, cheap items. Those often do better as local sales (see what sells fast on Facebook Marketplace).
  • Sold listings for the same item, checked on your phone before you pay. If nothing similar has sold, treat it as a gamble.

Where to source#

  • Your own home first. It costs you nothing, and it teaches you listing and shipping.
  • Thrift stores. Learn when your local store restocks by asking staff or visiting often. New racks get picked over fast.
  • Garage and yard sales. Go early for the best selection. Go late to haggle with sellers who want things gone.
  • Estate sales. Good for complete sets, older brands and tools. Prices often drop on the final day.
  • Supplier-fulfilled stock (drop shipping). eBay allows this only if you own the items before you list them, or if you have an agreement with a wholesale supplier to list and sell their items. You’re still responsible for on-time delivery and for the buyer being satisfied. eBay doesn’t mention print-on-demand by name, so read eBay’s drop-shipping rules and check how your supplier arrangement fits before you list.

Listing that sells#

  • Lead with a clean main photo on a plain background, then add close-ups of tags and flaws. Honest flaw photos are your best defense against not-as-described claims.
  • Put searchable facts in the title, not filler like “WOW” or “L@@K.”
  • Fill in every item specific. Buyers filter by size, color and brand, so an empty field can keep your listing out of those filtered results.
  • Price inside the sold range, not above the highest sale. If your price is near the top of the range, expect to wait.
  • When to drop the price: if a listing gets views but no sales, look at the photos and price first. If it gets almost no views, the title or item specifics are the likely problem. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what worked.
  • Before you turn on ads, work out your profit with the ad rate included. Under the 30-day rule, you can pay the ad fee even when the buyer never clicked your ad.

Shipping and getting paid#

Small cards and coins: the eBay Standard Envelope is a cheap option for eligible items, such as select trading cards and coins, that sell for under $20. It ships to US addresses only.

eBay labels: since August 2026, if a buyer opens an item-not-received claim and the package turns up later, eBay refunds the buyer directly, as long as you used an eBay label.

Payouts, according to eBay’s payouts help page:

QuestionAnswer
Where does the money go?A checking account or Visa/Mastercard debit card
How often?Daily by default, or weekly (Tuesdays), every other Tuesday, or monthly (first Tuesday)
How fast?Usually available 1 to 2 days after payment is confirmed, then 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank
Faster option?Express payout costs a flat $2.00 and usually arrives within 30 minutes
Minimum payout?None

eBay can hold payouts if your tax info isn’t verified, your registration details don’t match, or it spots unusual activity. Get your details right on day one.

Sales tax: eBay calculates, collects and sends sales tax to the states that require it, so you don’t add it yourself.

Red flags#

  • Counterfeits and trademark trouble. Never list fakes, replicas, or items that copy someone else’s design or logo. If a “designer” bag has crooked stitching, cheap hardware or a misspelled stamp, leave it on the shelf. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee checks eligible items at no cost to the seller: watches from $2,000, handbags, jewelry and coins from $500, and apparel and trading cards from $200.
  • Not-as-described fraud. One common scam is a buyer sending back a swapped or broken item. Under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, buyers can open a claim within 30 days even if you don’t accept returns, and you pay return shipping on not-as-described claims. Before you ship, photograph serial numbers and unique marks so you can prove what you sent.
  • Off-platform deals. Watch for overpayment by check or money order, requests to pay outside eBay, requests to ship to a different address, and fake “eBay” emails. eBay doesn’t protect deals made off the platform.
  • Retail arbitrage. eBay doesn’t allow listing an item you don’t own, then ordering it from another retailer or marketplace to ship straight to your buyer.
  • Unpaid items. Buyers should pay within 4 calendar days. After that, you can cancel at any point up to 30 days.
  • Slow-moving stock. No category always sells. Big furniture, outdated electronics missing their cords, and anything with no sales history can sit on your shelf for months.

Taxes for US sellers#

This isn’t tax advice. Talk to a tax professional about your own situation.

  • 1099-K: payment platforms report you to the IRS when you receive more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year, according to the IRS 1099-K page. eBay uses the same rule and issues forms by January 31.
  • Lower state thresholds: Arkansas, DC, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia have lower reporting thresholds. Check your own state’s rules.
  • Backup withholding: if your tax ID isn’t right, eBay can withhold 24% for federal tax, plus state withholding in some states.
  • Selling your own used stuff: you can’t deduct a loss on a personal item, but you can report it so you aren’t taxed on it. A gain on a personal item is taxable.
  • Flipping as a business: profit from reselling is taxable whether or not you get a form. Under the IRS self-employed guidance, business income goes on Schedule C and self-employment tax goes on Schedule SE. You must file if your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more. Form 1040-ES helps you work out quarterly estimated payments. Keep your thrift receipts and records of what you spend on postage and supplies.

Leveling up: Top Rated Plus and eBay Live#

Top Rated Plus takes 10% off your final value fees (but not the per-order fee). To qualify, you need:

  • an account at least 90 days old
  • at least 100 transactions and $1,000 in sales with US buyers over 12 months
  • a handling time of the same day or 1 business day
  • free returns for 30 days or longer

eBay Live charges 8.9% plus $0.30 per order in most categories, according to trade press, and you need a business account. From October 15, 2026, Live sales will no longer count toward seller level, Top Rated Plus or service metrics.

Who eBay selling is not for#

eBay probably isn’t for you if you hate packing boxes, can’t shrug off the odd unfair return, or want income that doesn’t take your time. Every sale means photos, buyer questions, a post office run or a pickup, and sometimes a dispute. If you’d rather sell bulky items with no shipping, start with our Facebook Marketplace selling tips instead.

Your first flip#

Try name-brand fleece jackets and pullovers. They’re light, fold flat into a poly mailer, and show the brand and size right on the tag. Our rule: only buy if the shelf price is under 25% of the lowest recent sold price you find on eBay, and never pay more than $8 until you’ve sold five. Before you pay, check the zipper, cuffs and underarms for pilling, and look closely at the logo stitching and tags, because popular outdoor brands get counterfeited too. Then redo the flip math at the top of this page with your real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an eBay Store to start selling?
No. Sellers without a Store get up to 250 free listings a month, which is plenty for most beginners. A Store mainly makes sense once you regularly list well over 250 items a month. It won’t raise your selling limits.
Can I get my eBay payouts through PayPal or into a savings account?
No. eBay pays out only to a checking account or a Visa or Mastercard debit card. If you need money fast, express payout costs a flat $2.00 and usually arrives within 30 minutes.
Does eBay refund my fees if a sale gets canceled?
If a buyer asks to cancel and you approve it, eBay refunds the full final value fee, including the per-order fee. Since May 13, 2026, winning auction bidders can’t cancel on their own, so approving a request is up to you.
Can I sell print-on-demand products on eBay?
eBay’s drop-shipping policy doesn’t mention print-on-demand by name. It allows supplier-fulfilled sales when you own the items before listing or have an agreement with a wholesale supplier, and you remain responsible for on-time delivery and buyer satisfaction. Read the policy and check your supplier arrangement before listing.
Do I have to charge buyers sales tax myself?
No. eBay calculates, collects and sends sales tax to the states that require it, at no cost to you. Your own income tax on profits is separate and is your responsibility.
