Is It Best to Sell on eBay or Vinted? One Rule Decides It
eBay or Vinted for flipping? Vinted bans reselling on US standard accounts. Fees, payouts, shipping cover and flip math for thrift resellers compared.
In this guide
If you buy stock to resell, eBay is the better platform in the US. Vinted’s standard US accounts are for personal, non-commercial selling only, and its business program isn’t available here. Vinted is still useful for one job: clearing out your own closet, because sellers pay no commission.
Flip math: one $100 jacket, two platforms (worked example)
| Platform | eBay (thrift flip) | Vinted (your own jacket only) |
|---|---|---|
| Buy price | $15 (our assumed thrift price) | Already in your closet |
| Sell price | $100 | $100 |
| Fees | $14.00 (13.6% + $0.40 per-order fee) | $0 seller fee |
| Shipping/supplies | $12 (our assumption: label and mailer, free shipping built into the price) | $2 (our assumption: mailer only, since the buyer pays the label) |
| Profit | $59 | $98 |

On paper the Vinted row wins easily. The catch is that it only applies to a jacket you bought to wear yourself. Pull that same jacket off a Goodwill rack to flip on Vinted and you’re breaking the platform’s rules. Neither row counts your time, either. Photographing, measuring, listing and packing is real work, so factor it in before you call a $59 margin a win.
The Vinted Rule Most Comparisons Skip
“No seller fees” gets all the attention. For a flipper, the rule that matters more is in Vinted’s commercial selling policy:
- Standard accounts can’t be used “to sell items professionally,” and that includes “buying or sourcing items and reselling them at a profit.”
- This applies even if you own a legally registered business.
- New stock bought to resell isn’t allowed. Vinted names “stock from wholesalers, bulk orders, or items bought from retail stores to resell for a profit,” so retail arbitrage is out.
- You can’t list new commercial stock as pre-owned or as your personal property.
- Vinted Pro, the program for professional sellers, is “not currently available” in the US.
- If you break the rules, Vinted may restrict your account. Keep doing it after a warning and it may ban you permanently.
Brand-new personal items are fine, such as a birthday gift you never wore or shoes that didn’t fit, as long as you first got them for yourself. Print-on-demand and handmade sellers get very little room: Vinted allows “a small number of unique handmade items” if the selling is occasional, but not commercial selling of new handmade goods.
Vinted doesn’t say how it spots resellers or how strictly it enforces the rule, and we won’t guess. Our call: we wouldn’t build a sourcing business on an account the platform says can’t be used for one.
Fees, Side by Side
| eBay (standard seller) | Vinted US | |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | 13.6% in most categories, up to $7,500 | None on the price list |
| Per-order fee | $0.30 on orders of $10 or less, $0.40 above $10 | None |
| Listing fees | 250 free a month, then $0.35 each in most categories | None listed |
| What the buyer adds | Shipping you charge, plus sales tax eBay collects | Buyer fee “usually 5% + $0.70,” plus shipping; the total shown includes sales tax |
| Paid visibility | Promoted Listings, 2% to 100% ad rate | Bumps for 3 or 7 days, US prices not published |
The eBay figures come from eBay’s fee page, and the Vinted figures from Vinted’s US price list. eBay’s rate changes by category, so check yours before you buy:
- Books, Movies & Music: 15.3%
- Women’s handbags: 15% up to $2,000
- Jewelry & Watches: 15% up to $5,000
- Athletic shoes selling for $150 or more: 8%, with no per-order fee
- Guitars & Basses: 6.7%
On Vinted the buyer pays the fees. On a $100 listing that’s about $5.70 before tax and shipping, though Vinted says the fee varies by item, order value and order type. So the seller keeps the full price, but your $100 jacket costs the buyer noticeably more than $100. Expect offers.
Two eBay costs can shrink the margin further. Since January 13, 2026, a general Promoted Listings fee applies if the item sells within 30 days of any buyer clicking the ad, not only the buyer who purchased. And sellers rated Below Standard now pay an extra 6%, rising to 7% after four or more months in a row. Ship on time and describe items honestly so you stay out of that bracket. Getting Paid
eBay:
- Funds usually become available 1 to 2 days after the buyer’s payment is confirmed, before the parcel arrives.
- The bank transfer then takes 1 to 3 business days. Daily payouts are the default.
- Express payout costs $2.00 and usually lands within 30 minutes.
- Payouts go to a checking account or a Visa/Mastercard debit card. PayPal and savings accounts aren’t accepted.
Vinted:
- An order completes when the buyer taps “Everything is OK,” or when 2 days pass after delivery with no reported problem.
- The money then moves from pending to available within 2 days.
- Withdrawals take up to 5 business days and only go to a US bank account. The minimum is $0.10.
- One bank account can’t receive money from more than one Vinted account.
If you need cash back fast to restock for Saturday’s garage sales, eBay’s timing is much friendlier. Vinted pays nothing until the item is delivered and confirmed.
Shipping and Buyer Claims
On Vinted, the buyer pays shipping at checkout. You either show a QR code at the post office or print a USPS label for home pickup. If the order comes with a Vinted prepaid label, you must use it, because any other shipping option cancels the order automatically. Lost or damaged parcels are only covered if you used a Vinted-generated label, packed the item properly and the carrier confirms the problem. Cover is capped at $100 for USPS and FedEx, $15 for SpeedX and $27 for US to UK shipments, and investigations can take several weeks.
On eBay, you set the shipping. The eBay Standard Envelope is a cheap option for eligible cards and coins selling under $20. Orders totaling $750 or more need signature confirmation for item-not-received protection. Under the Money Back Guarantee, buyers can open a not-as-described claim within 30 days even if you don’t accept returns, and you pay the return shipping. One change works in sellers’ favor: since May 13, 2026, winning bidders on eBay.com can no longer cancel an auction themselves.
What Each Platform Is Good For
Use Vinted for:
- Clothes from your own closet that you no longer wear
- Gifts and wrong-size purchases, even with the tags still on
- Low-value personal items where 13.6% plus $0.40 on eBay would eat the sale
- Sales where you can wait a week or more for the money
Use eBay for:
- Anything you sourced at thrift stores, garage sales or estate sales
- Coins (Vinted bans valid coins and banknotes)
- Non-working electronics sold for parts, which Vinted’s not-allowed list excludes
- Knives and safety helmets, which Vinted also bans
- Pricier pieces covered by eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee: handbags, jewelry and coins at $500+, watches at $2,000+, apparel and trading cards at $200+
Bulky finds that cost a fortune to ship often do better locally. Our guide to what sells on Facebook Marketplace covers that side.
Red Flags
- Fakes. Both platforms ban counterfeits. If a “designer” bag has crooked stitching, a flimsy zipper pull or a misspelled stamp, leave it on the shelf. Never list replicas or anything that copies someone else’s trademark or design.
- Vinted’s banned list. Used cosmetics, undergarments, recalled products, food, fur and reptile skin all turn up at thrift stores. None of them can go on Vinted.
- Item swaps on eBay. Trade press reports that not-as-described fraud, where a buyer sends back a different or broken item, is now the biggest threat to sellers. Photograph serial numbers, tags and flaws before you ship.
- Off-platform deals. Buyers asking to pay by check, pay outside eBay or ship to a different address are running classic scams. eBay doesn’t protect deals made off the platform.
Listing That Sells on eBay
- Price from sold listings, not active ones.
- Since August 2026, eBay’s fashion categories require standardized sizes. Fill in the size field, and put measurements in the description too.
- Shoot real photos in daylight on a plain background with no filters, and photograph every flaw.
- Write titles the way buyers search: brand, item type, size, color, material.
- If a listing has no watchers after a couple of weeks, we’d lower the price before paying for ads. If you do promote, the 30-day attribution rule above applies.
Taxes Either Way
The IRS 1099-K rule applies to every payment platform. You get a form once you receive more than $20,000 and make more than 200 transactions in a year. eBay notes that ten jurisdictions use lower thresholds, and it needs your full 9-digit SSN, ITIN or EIN to avoid payout holds. Flipping profit is taxable whether or not you get a form. You can’t deduct a loss on a closet item sold for less than you paid. You still report the sale (on Schedule 1, or on Form 8949 with Schedule D) so that money isn’t taxed. This is general information, not tax advice, so check your own situation with a tax professional.
FAQ
Can I cross-list my thrift finds on eBay and Vinted? Not on a standard Vinted US account. Items you sourced to resell at a profit belong on eBay or a local channel like Facebook Marketplace. Our Marketplace selling tips cover that route.
Can I sell new-with-tags items on Vinted? Yes, if you first bought them for yourself, like a gift or a purchase that didn’t fit. You can’t sell stock bought from stores or wholesalers to resell.
Will Vinted send me a 1099-K? Vinted doesn’t publish a US tax page that we could find. The federal $20,000 and 200-transaction rule applies to all payment platforms, and profit is taxable either way.
Which one pays faster? eBay. Its funds usually become available 1 to 2 days after payment. Vinted waits for delivery and confirmation, then the transfer can take up to 5 business days.
Your First Flip
At the thrift store, look for men’s denim and canvas work jackets. Only buy one if it’s under $15 and eBay sold listings show similar jackets going for $60 or more. At $60, eBay fees come to about $8.56. Subtract the $15 buy price and our assumed $12 for shipping and you keep roughly $24, before counting your time. Check the brand tag, rivets and stitching against real examples so you don’t buy a knockoff, then list the jacket on eBay. The same weekend, put the clothes you no longer wear on Vinted, because selling your own closet is exactly what Vinted is for.
