Best to Sell on eBay or Etsy? A Flipper's Fee Breakdown

eBay or Etsy for thrift flips and print-on-demand? Real US fees, a $100 sale test, buyer numbers and which stock belongs on each platform in 2026.

Posted

The short answer: for thrift, garage-sale and estate-sale stock, eBay is the better place to sell. It has far more buyers, and it takes used goods in almost every category: its fee table runs from coins and guitars to handbags and heavy equipment. Etsy is the better fit when the product is yours, meaning things you make or your own designs on print-on-demand blanks, and when the item clearly meets Etsy’s listing rules. Our call: make eBay your main shop, and only send stock to Etsy when it obviously belongs there.

Flip math: a thrifted jacket sold on eBay (example)

ItemAmount
Buy price$8.00 (assumed)
Sell price$45.00, free shipping
Fees$6.52
Shipping/supplies$9.00 (assumed)
Profit$21.48

Example flip check current fees

The fees are eBay’s standard 13.6% final value fee on a $45 order total ($6.12), plus the $0.40 per-order fee on orders over $10. The buy price and the label-and-poly-mailer cost are our assumptions. Your real shipping cost depends on weight, box size and distance. If sourcing, cleaning, photos and the post office run take you about an hour (also an assumption), that flip pays roughly $21 for the hour.

Fees Side by Side

Here’s what each platform charges a standard US seller, from eBay’s official fee page and the fee breakdown in Etsy’s annual report filed with the SEC.

FeeeBay (no Store)Etsy
Listing250 free a month, then $0.35 each in most categories$0.20 per listing
Sale fee13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500, plus $0.30 per order ($10 or less) or $0.40 (over $10)6.5% transaction fee
Payment processingAlready included aboveCharged separately: 3% to 6.5% depending on the country
AdvertisingPromoted Listings (general): you pick 2% to 100% of the saleOffsite Ads: 12% or 15% of a sale that came from one, depending on your sales volume

A few eBay category rates matter for flippers:

  • Books, Movies & Music: 15.3%, which hurts on cheap paperbacks and DVDs.
  • Women’s handbags: 15% up to $2,000.
  • Jewelry & Watches: 15% up to $5,000.
  • Guitars & Basses: 6.7%, one of the lowest rates a thrifter will see.
  • Athletic shoes at $150 or more: 8%, with no per-order fee.

If you sell to buyers abroad, eBay adds a 1.65% international fee for US sellers. New to the platform? Our guide on how to sell on eBay for beginners walks through account setup and first listings.

The $100 Sale Test

Here’s what each platform takes when an item sells for $100.

eBay: $13.60 final value fee + $0.40 per-order fee = $14.00, with payment processing included. That’s the whole bill unless you pay for ads.

Etsy: $0.20 listing + $6.50 transaction fee = $6.70 before payment processing. Etsy’s filing only gives a 3% to 6.5% range for processing across countries, so check Etsy’s fee page for the current US rate (and any flat amount per order) before you price anything.

On base fees, Etsy looks cheaper. Offsite Ads change that. If the $100 sale came from one of those ads, Etsy adds $12 or $15. That puts you at $18.70 or $21.70 before processing, well past eBay’s $14.00.

eBay has ad traps too. Since January 13, 2026, a general Promoted Listings fee is charged if the item sells within 30 days of any buyer clicking the ad, not only the buyer who bought it, as long as the listing was promoted at both moments (eBay’s attribution page). If you promote at, say, 8%, count that 8% against every promoted sale.

Also watch your service record. Since July 1, 2026, eBay sellers rated Below Standard pay an extra 6% (7% after four or more months in a row). Sellers with a “Very High” rate of not-as-described returns pay an extra 5% in the affected categories (6% after four or more months). Sloppy descriptions cost real money.

Where the Buyers Are

The two companies’ year-end 2025 results show the size gap:

  • eBay: 135 million active buyers and $79.6 billion in yearly sales.
  • Etsy: 86.5 million active buyers (down 3.4%) and about $10.46 billion in sales.

So eBay has about 1.6 times the buyers and about 7.6 times the sales. For a random thrift find, more eyeballs usually means a faster sale. Nothing is guaranteed, but the odds lean eBay’s way.

One more change: Depop is no longer Etsy’s sister site. eBay completed its purchase of Depop on July 30, 2026, and Depop keeps its own brand and app. If you’re weighing other secondhand apps, see our take on eBay or Vinted for resellers.

What Belongs Where

What to look for: eBay stock

  • Brand-name clothing with readable tags and intact seams. Fashion categories now require standardized sizes, so measure and record the size properly.
  • Guitars and basses, at that 6.7% rate.
  • Trading cards and coins. Eligible items selling under $20 can ship US-only with eBay Standard Envelope.
  • Sneakers that will sell for $150 or more (8%, no per-order fee).
  • Hardcover sets, vinyl and media, but only when the price absorbs the 15.3% rate.
  • Watches, handbags and jewelry you can verify. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee checks eligible items at no cost to you: watches at $2,000+, handbags, jewelry and coins at $500+, and apparel and trading cards at $200+.

What to look for: Etsy stock

  • Things you made yourself, photographed so the handwork shows.
  • Print-on-demand products carrying your own original designs.
  • Older pieces that meet Etsy’s definition of vintage.

Before you list a single thrifted item on Etsy, read Etsy’s rules on reselling, vintage and production partners in its Help Center. Those rules decide whether a find is allowed there at all, and a shop that breaks them risks its listings. If you’re unsure, eBay is the safer home for it. Bulky furniture and local-pickup pieces often do better on neither; our Facebook Marketplace selling tips cover that route.

Red Flags

  • Fakes. Never list replicas, “inspired by” logos or anything you can’t stand behind. Check serial numbers, stamped hardware, stitching density and tag fonts. If a designer bag turns up for $6, assume it’s fake until you’ve proven otherwise.
  • Other people’s designs. On print-on-demand, putting sports logos, cartoon characters or another artist’s work on a shirt is trademark and copyright trouble. Sell only what you created.
  • Not-as-described claims. eBay’s Money Back Guarantee lets buyers claim within 30 days even if you don’t accept returns, and you pay return shipping on not-as-described items. Photograph every flaw and serial number so a swapped return is easier to spot.
  • High-value orders. On eBay, orders of $750 or more (including shipping and tax) need signature confirmation to be covered for item-not-received claims.
  • Off-platform deals. Requests to pay outside eBay, overpayment by check, or shipping to a different address are classic scams. eBay doesn’t protect deals made off the platform.

Listing That Sells

  • Price from sold listings, not asking prices. On eBay, filter by sold items and price against what actually closed.
  • Auctions are binding now. Since May 13, 2026, winning bidders on eBay.com can’t cancel on their own. They have to ask you. Start auctions only at a price you can live with.
  • Unpaid items. Buyers should pay within 4 calendar days. After that you can cancel at any point up to 30 days.
  • Top Rated Plus takes 10% off your final value fees (not the per-order fee). You need an account at least 90 days old, 100 transactions and $1,000 in sales with US buyers over 12 months, same-day or 1-day handling, and free 30-day returns.

When an eBay Store Pays Off

eBay Store pricing starts at $7.95 a month (or $4.95 a month on a yearly plan) for Starter. Basic costs $27.95 month to month, or $21.95 a month on a yearly plan. Store subscribers pay lower final value fee percentages, but the per-order fee still applies.

The math that matters: without a Store, listing 1,000 items a month means 750 paid listings × $0.35 = $262.50. Basic includes 1,000 free fixed-price listings for $27.95. Listing a few dozen pieces a month? Skip it. Spare room overflowing? It pays for itself fast. A Store doesn’t raise your selling limits, though. New sellers start with monthly limits that eBay reviews and raises over time.

Taxes on Either Platform

Under the IRS rule, payment platforms report you on Form 1099-K when you receive more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. eBay notes that ten jurisdictions have lower thresholds: Arkansas, DC, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia. Reselling profit is taxable whether or not a form shows up. A personal item sold at a loss isn’t deductible, but you report it so you aren’t taxed on it. Keep your receipts. This is general information, not tax advice, so check with a tax professional about your own situation.

FAQ

Can I list the same item on both? Nothing in the fees stops you, but you pay listing fees on both and risk selling one item twice. The moment it sells on one platform, end the other listing.

How fast does eBay pay me? Funds usually become available 1 to 2 days after payment is confirmed, then take 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank. Express payout costs a flat $2.00 and usually lands within 30 minutes. Payouts go to a checking account or a Visa/Mastercard debit card, not PayPal or savings.

Do I have to collect sales tax on eBay? No. eBay calculates, collects and sends sales tax to the states that require it, at no cost to you.

How old do I have to be to sell on eBay? 18 or older, and eBay needs a full 9-digit SSN, ITIN or EIN on every seller account to avoid payout holds.

Your First Flip

Go for brand-name outerwear from the thrift rack, listed on eBay: fleece, rain shells and wool coats with clean zippers, full tags and no pit stains.

Our buy rule: check eBay’s sold listings while you’re still in the store, and only buy if the tag price is under one-quarter of the typical sold price and there’s at least $15 left after 13.6% + $0.40 and your estimated shipping. Skip anything with a logo you can’t verify. Then lay it flat on a plain floor, shoot the tags and measurements, and list it that night.

Questions at the counter

How fast does eBay pay me after a sale?

Payouts are daily by default. Funds usually become available 1 to 2 days after payment is confirmed, then take 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank. You can pay a flat $2.00 for an express payout, which usually lands within 30 minutes. Payouts go to a checking account or a Visa/Mastercard debit card, not PayPal or a savings account.

Do I have to collect sales tax on my eBay sales?

No. eBay calculates, collects and sends sales tax to the states that require it, at no cost to you. You still owe income tax on your profit, so keep your buy receipts.

What do I need to open an eBay seller account?

eBay’s rules say you must be 18 or older. Every seller account also needs a full 9-digit Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN, ITIN or EIN). If it’s missing or wrong, eBay can hold your payouts and apply backup withholding of 24% federal.

Should I try Depop for clothes instead of Etsy?

It’s worth a look for secondhand fashion, but remember Depop now belongs to eBay. The deal closed July 30, 2026, and Depop still runs under its own brand and app. Check Depop’s own fee page before you move stock there, and run the same flip math you’d use anywhere else.
