7 Best Items to Sell on eBay, Backed by eBay's Own Sales Data

The best items to sell on eBay, based on eBay's own 2026 sales data: cards, coins, auto parts, sneakers, watches and more, with fee math and buy rules.

Posted

The best items to sell on eBay right now sit in the categories eBay itself says are growing: trading cards and other collectibles (coins, toys, sports memorabilia), auto parts, pre-owned fashion and sneakers, luxury watches, and refurbished or pre-owned gear. Within those, buy only items whose recent sold listings leave you money after fees and shipping.

Flip math (one example: the buy price, sell price and shipping cost are our assumptions; the fees are eBay’s standard rates)

ItemAmount
Buy price$8 (complete thrifted board game)
Sell price$60, free shipping
Fees$8.56 (13.6% + $0.40 per order)
Shipping/supplies$9 (assumed label and box)
Profit$34.44

Example flip check current fees

We assume the game sits in a standard 13.6% category and that you offer free shipping, so the fee is worked out on the $60 total. That $34.44 also has to pay for the thrift run, counting every piece, the photos and the packing. If all that takes an hour, you earned about $34 for the hour. Plenty of finds will do worse, and some won’t sell at all.

What eBay’s Numbers Say Is Selling

Most “best sellers” lists online are vendor estimates with no stated method, so we went to eBay’s own filings. In its Q2 2026 results, eBay reported $22.4 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV, the total value of everything sold), up 15% as reported, and 136 million active buyers. The category highlights named collectibles and trading cards, motors parts and accessories, fashion, luxury watches, and refurbished and pre-owned goods.

According to a transcript of the earnings call, management said these focus categories grew 26% in the quarter and topped 40% of total GMV for the first time. Trading cards led collectibles growth, and coins, toys and sports memorabilia were also growing strongly.

Buyers want used goods, too. eBay’s 2026 Recommerce Report surveyed 10,522 consumers in 10 countries. It found 47% buy secondhand at least monthly, up from 35% in 2025. In the US, 36% called secondhand “very important” to their household budget.

Growth shows you where the buyers are. It doesn’t guarantee any single item will sell, so check sold listings for each one before you buy.

7 Items Worth Hunting

1. Trading Cards

eBay’s card-scanning feature has passed 80 million scans, which gives you a sense of how busy this category is. What to check:

  • sharp corners, clean edges and centered print
  • creases and surface scratches (tilt each card under a light to find them)
  • rookie cards and serial-numbered cards, which you should pull out first
  • binders and boxes of sleeved cards at estate sales

Cheap cards can go out with the eBay Standard Envelope. It covers eligible items that sell for under $20 and works only within the US. Cards that sell for $200 or more go through eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee, which costs the seller nothing.

2. Coins

Non-bullion coins pay a 13.25% final value fee, a little under the standard rate. Coins selling for $500 or more go through Authenticity Guarantee, and some cheaper coins can ship in the Standard Envelope. Our rule: if you can’t confirm a coin is genuine, don’t buy it.

3. Toys and Sports Memorabilia

What to look for:

  • the original box, even if it’s a bit worn
  • every accessory, manual and insert
  • factory seals with no cuts or resealing
  • the photo on the box that shows what “complete” means

We pass on autographs that don’t come with credible authentication.

4. Auto Parts

Hobby mechanics’ garages and estate sales are full of parts. Find the part number stamped or printed on each one, because buyers search by number and fitment. Weigh the part before you pay for it, since a heavy part with free shipping can wipe out your profit. In October 2026, eBay also launched a “Certified Recycled” program for auto-parts sellers.

5. Pre-Owned Fashion and Sneakers

Sneakers get one of the best fee breaks on eBay. Athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more pay 8% with no per-order fee. Since August 2026, fashion categories have required standardized sizes, so read the size tag and measure the item as well. Apparel selling for $200 or more is covered by Authenticity Guarantee. Women’s handbags pay 15% on sales up to $2,000, and handbags of $500 or more get authenticated.

Check brand tags, care labels, stitching and outsole wear. Brand-name items carry counterfeit risk. Selling a fake, even one you bought by mistake, breaks eBay’s rules and infringes the brand’s trademark.

6. Watches and Jewelry

Jewelry & Watches pays 15% on sales up to $5,000. Look for:

  • hallmarks such as 925 or 14K
  • a movement that actually runs
  • the original box and papers

Watches selling for $2,000 or more and jewelry selling for $500 or more go through Authenticity Guarantee. For orders totaling $750 or more, you need signature confirmation to be covered against item-not-received claims.

7. Working Pre-Owned Gear (Guitars Included)

Refurbished and pre-owned goods are one of eBay’s focus areas. Guitars & Basses pay the lowest everyday fee in this guide, 6.7%. Test everything before you pay: power it on, press every button and plug something into every jack. Photograph serial numbers so you can tell if a returned item has been swapped.

The Fee Table That Changes Your Picks

Here’s what eBay keeps from a $200 sale in each category, using the rates on eBay’s fee page:

CategoryRateFee on $200
Guitars & Basses6.7% + $0.40$13.80
Athletic shoes ($150+)8%, no per-order fee$16.00
Coins (non-bullion)13.25% + $0.40$26.90
Most categories13.6% + $0.40$27.60
Women’s handbags15% + $0.40$30.40
Jewelry & Watches15% + $0.40$30.40
Books, Movies & Music15.3% + $0.40$31.00

Fees bite hardest on cheap media. A $10 book pays $1.53 plus a $0.30 per-order fee, over 18% of the sale before you’ve bought a mailer. You get up to 250 free listings a month. After that, most categories charge $0.35 per listing. If you list on another country’s eBay site, there’s a 1.65% international fee, and the currency conversion charge rose to 3.25% for US sellers on October 14, 2026. How to Check Before You Pay

Product Research (formerly Terapeak) is free for all sellers. It’s in the Research tab of Seller Hub and in the mobile apps. It covers 3 years of eBay sales and shows:

  • average sold price and price range
  • average shipping cost
  • sell-through rate
  • how many sellers list the item

Look items up while you’re still in the aisle, and set your price from what has actually sold, not from what other sellers are asking.

Start sourcing at home. In eBay’s global seller survey, 85% of sellers sold their own belongings and 28% sold items from friends’ and family’s closets. Then move on to thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales. Bulky items that cost too much to ship may do better locally. Our guide on what sells on Facebook Marketplace covers those.

Red Flags

  • Counterfeits are on eBay’s prohibited and restricted items list. So are knives, medicines, tobacco and e-cigarettes, gift cards, event tickets and medical devices. Many of these are restricted rather than banned outright, so read the sub-policy before you buy.
  • Under the Money Back Guarantee, buyers can file a not-as-described claim within 30 days even if you don’t accept returns, and you pay the return shipping. List every flaw.
  • Since July 1, 2026, Below Standard sellers pay an extra 6%, rising to 7% after four or more months in a row. Sellers with a very high rate of not-as-described returns pay an extra 5% in the affected categories, rising to 6%.
  • Since May 13, 2026, winning bidders can’t cancel auctions. They can ask you to cancel, but it’s your decision.

Listing That Sells

  • Shoot on a plain background from every angle, with close-ups of tags, flaws and serial numbers. Don’t use filters.
  • Build titles from the words buyers search for: brand, model, size, color.
  • General Promoted Listings charge a percentage of the sale that you set, from 2% to 100%. Since January 13, 2026, you pay that fee if the item sells within 30 days of any buyer clicking the ad, so include it in your flip math.
  • If an item gets views but no watchers after two weeks, we cut the price by about 10% and check sold listings again.

The Tax Part

This is a general overview, not tax advice. Payment platforms report you to the IRS once you receive more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. Reselling profit is taxable whether or not you get a form. Some states, including Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia, have lower reporting thresholds. Buying items specifically to resell counts as self-employment income. Self-employment tax is 15.3%, and you file Schedule SE once your net earnings reach $400. A tax professional can tell you how this applies to you.

FAQ

Do I need an eBay Store to start? No. Without one you get up to 250 free listings a month. The Starter Store costs $7.95 a month if you pay month to month, or $4.95 a month on a yearly plan. A Store doesn’t raise your selling limits.

How fast do I get paid? Daily payouts are the default. Funds usually become available 1 to 2 days after payment is confirmed, then take 1 to 3 business days to reach your checking account or debit card. Express payout costs $2 and usually arrives within 30 minutes. PayPal and savings accounts aren’t accepted.

Can I list Walmart or Amazon products and have them ship to my buyer? No. eBay allows dropshipping only when orders are fulfilled directly from a wholesale supplier.

Can an auction winner back out? Not on their own. Since May 2026, auction sales on eBay.com are final, and you decide whether to approve a cancellation request.

Your First Flip

Try complete board games and boxed toys. Many shoppers skip them because they’re bulky, and you can count the pieces right there in the store. Our rule: buy only if the shelf price is under $10 and under a quarter of the average sold price in Product Research. Count every piece again before you list.

Questions at the counter

Can I buy clearance items at Walmart or Amazon and resell them on eBay?

You can buy stock in person and ship it yourself. What eBay doesn’t allow is listing an item and then ordering it from another retailer or marketplace to ship straight to your buyer. Dropshipping is only allowed when a wholesale supplier fulfills the order, and you’re still responsible for it arriving on time.

Do I need an eBay Store to start selling?

No. Every seller gets up to 250 free listings a month. The Starter Store costs $7.95 a month if you pay month to month, or $4.95 a month on a yearly plan. Store subscribers pay lower final value fee percentages, but a Store won’t raise your selling limits. eBay raises those over time based on your sales and feedback.

How fast do I get paid after a sale?

Funds usually become available 1 to 2 days after the buyer’s payment is confirmed. They then take 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank. Express payout costs a flat $2.00 and usually arrives within 30 minutes. Payouts go to a checking account or a Visa or Mastercard debit card, not to PayPal or a savings account.

Should I list as an auction or Buy It Now?

We use Buy It Now for common items with plenty of sold comps, and save auctions for pieces where several buyers might compete. Since May 13, 2026, winning bidders can’t cancel. Buyers should pay within 4 calendar days, and after that you can cancel an unpaid order at any time up to 30 days.
